Going Solo

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on January 6, 2016 by Steve ThompsonJanuary 6, 2016

Writing a song in the room next to Motorhead

I recently told part of this story as it related to Lemmy of Motorhead. Here is the full story (part one)

gus-3x2It would be circa 1983/4. I had just signed an exclusive songwriting deal with MCA Music. Record Producer, Gus Dudgeon wrote to MCA complementing them on their wisdom in signing me and urged them to get cracking on some songs for the new Elkie Brooks album. I’d worked with Gus a few times up to then but over the years I was to work with him a great deal. I thought it was really generous of him to write to my new publisher like that. To non-musicians Gus may not be a household name but the artists he produced are certainly well known: David Bowie, Elkie Brooks, Joan Armatrading plus the majority of Elton John’s output. He also produced a slew of North East acts: Lindisfarne, Chris Rea, John Miles and The Caffrey Brothers (this was when first met him)

Obviously I was definitely going to take up the Elkie Brooks challenge but I also knew how pernickety Gus was about songs, and so I devised a cunning plan. I figured the best way to get a cut on the next Elkie album (Gus had produced Pearls and Pearls ii) was to invite him to write it with me. As it turned out I was wrong. Elkie fired Gus as producer before he ever got to even play her our “Going Solo” and the recording was never heard (till now – I dug it out and I will append to this story). Several years later Elkie did cut two of my songs and guess what? –  the album was called Pearls iii but my subterfuge with Gus played no part in that. However, that’s another story.

Back to the songwriting. I thought Gus would sit politely back whilst I wrote the song and he looked on, maybe tossing in the odd producer’s comment or suggestions as he had never written a song before. However, it did not pan out that way and it turned out to be quite an adventure. The writing session started out at MCA’s offices. They were really excited about this and they had a removals firm come in to move a grand piano out the MD’s office into a large open area. The writing began but it was kinda odd as people kept stopping by to take a peek. Gus declared that the next day should be different so he had MCA rent a whole rehearsal room complete with a stage and a PA. Talk about overkill !

So the next day just after noon we turned up at Nomis Studios in West London for the next phase of the writing process. I neglected to mention that the man who signed me to MCA and was my mentor there was Pete Waterman. Pete managed a producer called Peter Collins who was also starting to record a lot of my material. We borrowed an acoustic guitar and drum machine off Peter Collins for the writing session. So here comes the Lemmy bit. Gus and I were ready to begin writing session part 2 when all hell broke loose, There came a thunderous noise from next door and various parts of the room were shaking.  When it stopped we went through and, lo and behold it was Motorhead having a little rehearsal with the amps turned up to 11. I think Gus knew the guys and we had a little chat. Lemmy said they would be going off to the pub soon. After a couple more songs, sure enough they did just that, never to return. Gus and I continued to work on the song and just like any session with Gus it went on and on and on. I will still have the worktapes from this session somewhere. Wish I could find them.

The next bit is a bit of a blur. Either we worked really late or else had dinner but my memory kicks back in as we are driving around London in Gus’s Aston Martin and its night time. I point out that we’re supposed to return the guitar and drum machine to Peter and it’s getting late. As we approach Peters street, Gus decides to call him. This is him being flash – nobody else I know had a phone in their car in ’83. Peter answers, “Hi, it’s Gus, we’re going to drop your kit off – just making sure you’re up”. Peter asks how long it will take to get there. Gus says, “two minutes, we’re turning into your street”. Looking back now realise this had something to do with Peter’s demeanour because when he answered the door he was in his dressing gown, his eyes were wide and he was very nervous. He invited us in and gave us coffee. Gus rolled a huge spliff and started to tell us some ripping yarns from his career. Terrific stuff with many twists and turns but he returns from the tangents every time without losing his thread. Eventually Gus says to Peter “I’m sorry old chap, we’re keeping you from your bed”. Then Peter says, “no problem, YOU ARE MY BIGGEST HERO”. I was Gobsmacked. Peter had enjoyed a zillion hits that year and at that moment in time was hotter than Gus. I’m talking about, Gary Moore, Bon Jovi, Billy Squier, Rush, Air Supply,  Nik Kershaw,Tracy Ullman, the list goes on.

We finally said goodnight and the next day I headed home. The next step would be to produce a rough demo and then a full demo which Gus declared he would come to Newcastle to produce. I realise this story has turned into an epic to I’ll continue the story in part 2 and include the actual recording we made.

To be continued ……..

The Blog So Far

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on December 28, 2015 by Steve ThompsonMay 5, 2018

Steve ThompsonThe Steve Thompson Band is set to go into rehearsal in January. It’s about 15 years since I gigged regularly (with the Mick Whitaker Band)  and I hadn’t really intended to do this now. There have been posts on Facebook, Twitter and this blog but Things have developed rapidly so I thought I’d lay it all out here and then blog the developing story regularly.

I guess it began when I posted a picture of my new guitar on Facebook. Bassist, Richard Rutherford commented and a conversation ensued. He said he’d be happy to join me in “gigging” the new guitar and was fairly confident that drummer Paul Smith would be up for it too. (and he was). I last saw Richard and Paul when we rolled out the Steve Thompson Band at the Customs House, South Shields. It was a review called Songs Of Love Work and War. Songs written by Tom Kelly and I including songs from our Musical “Steel Town”. Richard joined the band when we took the musical to Consett, the town where I was born and the original Steel Town of the story. He suggested back then that I put a band together to perform the songs I’ve written down the years. I didn’t go for it then as it seemed uncomfortably ego-centric.

So why now?

Well, I have a perception that some of what I’ve done has been around so long it ceases to be old fashioned and has become trendy or at least interesting. I’ve given talks around the world and done interviews for books and DVD’s on different aspects of my writing and production career. With the new band I can tell these stories and actually play the music I’m talking about. Now, that’s going to be a daunting task because as a writer I’ve written an eclectic range of material covering everything from pop ballads to heavy rock (see the image at the foot of this post). There has also been some interest in my very first band Bullfrog which toured extensively in the 70’s and cut a few records. So what I thought was this: What if Bullfrog had not disbanded ? What if I had written these songs for them and not the likes of Celine Dion, Elkie Brooks, Tygers of Pan Tang etc? So what I plan to do is put our most well known song in the set. We’ll make it sound credible and now? and then try to create a unified sound stemming from that. These songs all have other artists stamp on them and I’ve never performed them apart from cutting the demos. So what will our sound be? For this reason I plan to make the first rehearsals just a three piece – bass drums and guitar (as Bullfrog was). We have a keyboard player who will shortly be announced on the band line-up page and we’ll introduce him into the second wave of rehearsals. Furthermore I can’t sing for toffee so we’ll need to find a singer but we’ll also have guests – the first to come forward is Lorraine Crosby.

So exciting times ahead. I’ll keep you posted in this blog. You can like our Facebook Page or subscribe to our mailing list using the form at the foot of this page.

The Last Teardrop

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on December 18, 2015 by Steve ThompsonDecember 18, 2015

Earlier this year I was in Finland where I delivered a lecture on Heavy Metal.

I was having a beer whilst waiting for my tram when Meatloafs “Anything For Love” came on juke box. Of course I had to wait and wait until I heard my old mate Lorraine Crosby come in with that killer vocal. As I listened I saw my tram departing in the rainy street outside. So naturally I had to have another beer and as I waited for the next tram I had a Facebook chat with Lorraine and we both agreed too much time had passed since we last made music together. We agreed to do something about it. but you know how time passes and plans get forgotten etc. However, I’m delighted to report that when the Steve Thompson Band hits the road in the New Year Lorraine has agreed (schedules permitting) to guest on a few numbers. We’ll be doing The Last Teardrop a song I wrote for Elkie Brooks and sung in this version by Lorraine. Elkie made a few alterations in her version and we’ll be … er .. altering it back!

40 Years On

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on December 17, 2015 by Steve ThompsonDecember 17, 2015

I’ve been having an email conversation with a guy who recently bought my old band Bullfrog’s single (on vinyl obviously) He was intrigue that the B side was the stand-out track whilst the A side is crap so I told him the story.

I’ll be telling this and other stories when my band hits the road in the new year. I’m gonna throw that B side into the set too (check it out below). Then it struck me – the new band should be a continuation of Bullfrog – same attitude just like 40 years on. Like we’ve been hiding out in rehab or something.

If anyone wants to hear the crap A side you can get it from Amazon on a CD called 20 Powerglam Incendiaries http://bit.ly/powerglam  POWERGLAM FFS !!!!

Strike Up The Band

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on December 14, 2015 by Steve ThompsonDecember 14, 2015

My band goes into rehearsal in January.Core line-up is Paul Smith – Drums, Richard Rutherford – Bass and me on Guitar. Since my repertoire is so eclectic having written for a broad range of artistes http://goo.gl/HMlCxV we will use those early rehearsals to establish a sound and vision. Then we’ll add keyboards and vocals. The set will feature stories as well as songs and believe me, I have a lot of stories.
I’m deadly serious – my guitar is in the workshop being serviced. I’m going back to the Gym to service my ageing body and I’m practising my chops and getting my mojo ready – look out 2016 !!

A Night On The Pop

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on November 18, 2015 by Steve ThompsonNovember 18, 2015

header

Facebook reminded me that I posted this 2 years ago today. It’s a newspaper cutting that I broke down into separate pics so it could be read. It didn’t really work on Facebook so here it is again in my blog. You should be able to read the clips in order. It tells the story about the night Mick Whitaker and I were having a beer or two when we chanced upon a hapless journalist. We had a record out at the time so we went into heavy promo mode. The journalist tells it all blow by blow. I found a version of the recording I posted a while ago and you can hear it below. The first segment is Toni Haliday’s version, then Mick and finally Chris Farlow had a bash. The released version was by Mick. Click on he thumbnails below to read the story.

I Used To Be Famous

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on October 29, 2015 by Steve ThompsonOctober 29, 2015

This is my granddaughter Mia in the video below aged 6 spoofing up one of those “sell your house” TV shows. She tells her viewing public “The man who lives here used to be famous but he’s not that famous any more” Huh – out of the mouths of babes !!

Anyway, fast forward 8 years and she now owns that white guitar and this week she’s been learning to play on the red Strat. When she said she’d like to learn on this visit I thought, a few scales and maybe a chord or two. Then she tells me she’s now into Hendrix, Led Zep, The Doors, The Jam……..   get in !!

Saturday Shake Up

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on August 9, 2015 by Steve ThompsonAugust 9, 2015

Found this on an old cassette. Me and Mick Whitaker are pitching some demo ideas for a theme tune to Malcolm Gerrie of TTTV. Mickey Sweeney gets a mention too. We’re obviously feeling quite “happy”. I’m a little vague about whether we got the gig or not but I think maybe we did. I think it was the first one that made it to TV (freshly recorded of course)

Newcastle Community News

The Steve Thompson Band Posted on May 8, 2015 by Steve ThompsonMay 8, 2015

NCN developed out of the early Internet activities of Wolf FM, a community radio project in Walker, Newcastle. It grew and grew, attracting local interest as well as a large following of Geordie ex-pats from all over the world.  We  worked with Newcastle Literacy Trust and Newcastle Libraries Service and developed several groups of community reporters. This was before WordPress and Blogger and the training sessions that I ran contained a healthy dose of HTML tuition. The project was a labour of love and I just knew I had something special. However it attracted the attention of Teesside University and I ended up taking my ideas to Teesside. I believed at the time that I could keep the Tyneside project going but it eventually drifted and diminished. One day I’ll get round to putting the stories back online at http://ncn.me.uk/

Below is a hand made “business card” from the time. Not terribly unusual you may think by today’s standards but quite innovative for 1997 perhaps?
